Hearty Snacks for Fall and Winter for Weight Loss

As colder temperatures arrive, it is perfectly natural that your appetite will peak. This would happen to help protect people from starvation when we used to live in caves. Now that we live in ranch houses with central heat, it is less helpful, especially when you are on a diet. Fortunately there are some great hearty snacks for the fall and winter months for those who are trying to lose weight.

Eating healthy snacks is helpful in sticking to your diet. By eating hearty snacks, you’ll keep from getting to hungry and maintain a high metabolism. Many adults who diet eat one or two snacks each day plus three meals every day. Some adults actually prefer to eat five or six “mini meals” daily than to have larger meals because they believe so strongly in the success of a snack keeping your metabolism raised. Here are some snacks for fall and winter that will warm you up, and keep you from getting too hungry as you go about your fall and winter plans.

Vegetarian chili is an excellent snack when you are looking to warm up. Either homemade or from a can, this is a high-fiber, low-calorie snack that will get you up and going in no time! You can customize it and make it super spicy or keep it mild, whatever pleases you the most. Keep your serving appropriate by putting the chili in a mug, so you’ll stay to a cup.

Hummus and fresh veggies are an ideal snack in the fall and winter months. Try snacking on fresh squash or zucchini dipped in hummus. Hummus is made from chickpeas and is loaded with protein. In a larger serving, this can actually serve as a light lunch. This is a very portable snack that you can take just about anywhere you go.

Steel cut oatmeal is a great snack that will keep you full and is very warming. A serving of steel cut oats may even help lower your cholesterol. While many people think of this as a breakfast food, it also can be a great snack as you just cook and serve. Some of the instant oatmeals are also great choices for weight loss, be sure to read their calorie count and look for one that has sugar low on the ingredient list.

Half a grilled cheese sandwich on whole wheat bread is a filling snack that is perfect when you are looking for something to warm you up. This is one of the best hearty snacks when you are looking for some calcium too. Make this one of your veggie servings by slicing some tomatoes or other veggies on top.

A baked apple is a sweet snack that is so easy to make. Cook it in either water or diet ginger ale. Add some raisins. This is a great way to get some fiber and a fruit serving.
